The Steven Gary Backstory

Beginning with his first performance at age 4, Steven Gary was clearly destined to create music and entertain. As an accomplished composer of original music along with his amazing talent for taking popular hits as far back as the '20's to now, and interpreting then in a style all his own, Steven Gary is a musical force of nature.

Steven is a California native who started performing at the age of 4. Learning guitar, bass and trumpet his early credits include local radio play on radio station KALX in Berkeley, performances around the  San Francisco area and a nationwide tour with a college variety troup.

Moving to Hollywood he quickly came into demand as a vocalist for live and studio performances.  Among many others Steve recorded and/or performed with platinum songwriter David Pomeranz, Russian pop star Sasha Malinin, 60s legend Melanie, actor Elliot Gould,  Edgar Winter, film scorer and trumpet player Mark Isham, Frank Stallone(Sly’s brother), Karen Black, Rolling Stones pianist Nicky Hopkins,  Jazz master Chick Corea and Austrailian pop star Kate Ceberano.

 

Steven has logged over 15,000 performances in the US, Canada, Mexico, South America and the Caribbean   He performed with top Mexican pop stars Amanda Miguel, Diego Verdaguer, and Johnny Laboriel, Venezuelan Telenova star Ruddy Rodriguez, 70s Disco Diva Maxine Nightingale, “Waltons” star Judy Norton-Taylor, Catherine Bell (“Jag; The Good Witch”), “X-factor” finalist Stacy Francis, Drummer Tom Brechtline(Chick Corea, Jean Luc Ponty, Robben Ford),  keyboardists John Novello(Taste of Honey) and Peter Schless(Melissa Manchester, Jeffrey Osborn),  Rock bassist Billy Sheehan(David Lee Roth, Mr. Big), legendary arranger David Campbell(Carole King, Alanis Morrissette), “Steely Dan” bassist Tom Barney, David Crosby bandmate Jeff Pevar (CPR), Elisabeth Moss(Mad Men,  The Handmaid’s Tale) and Valerie Fahren!

 

Other highlights include performing at the St Lucia Jazz Festival, following Rhianna and opening for Babyface, and the St Vincent Blues festival opening for Oleta Adams, where Steve performed his song “I’ve Got No Right to Sing the Blues”

 

In the course of this wide variety of musical experiences, Steven developed a repertoire of over 1600 songs in addition to a healthy catalog of his own compositions.

 

Returning from his travels, Steve released  a number of songs including a CD of original music “Eclectic Acoustic” (available on iTunes and other outlets), a Christmas CD “Tis the Season” and Americana album "Things Change", which includes tracks recorded by Kenny Rogers bassist Chuck Jacobs and Missing Persons guitarist Karl D’Amico. .   Steve’s sense of humor has proven quite popular, with three novelty songs having appeared on the legendary "Dr. Demento" radio program.  His biting Dylan parody "Talking Media Fear Maker Blues (Everybody Must Get Scared) was on the Doctor's Top 10 for 3 months reaching all the way to #1 in June 2022.  

Steve's songs have appeared on numerous radio stations across the globe, in fact 8 of the 12 songs on "Things Change" have received radio play.   His songs have been performed by a number of local artists and he has shared stage with Carmel Helene (Miley Cyrus, Johnny Hallyday), Keyboardist Victoria Theodore(Stevie Wonder,Arsenio Hall) and 70s R&B legends ConFunkShun.  He also performed with Motown Icon Martha Reeves for a week of shows at the Rrazz Room in San Francisco. 

In 2020 Steven made good on a lifelong promise to himself by moving to Nashville, quickly involving himself in the thriving songwriter scene, learning the art of the co-write and honing his skills.  He soon teamed up with fellow California transplant Don Panzik, beginning a writing partnership that soon developed into Steve's very first orginal music project, Alt-country-rock band "Mockingbird Canyon Road".  Steven and MCR are making the rounds of showcase venues in Music City and preparing new recording projects - so stay tuned!
